Word 2000 hangs

I am using MS Word 2000 and I am often having to wait 10 seconds betwee
switching from one Word document to another. I have 3GB RAM on a Du
Core laptop running Windows XP.

Although the switch appears to be instant, I have to wait for th
document to be responsive. You can tell its processing/hung during thi
time. If I tried to access it during that time I get the usual Window
"Not responding" message. If I let it go then it appears to work.

Checking my process during that time shows lots of free memory and s
significant CPU usage. I run virus scans all the time and nothing come
back as a problem.

I often have many Word documents open at one time (10+, 20+), but i
seems to be a problem also when I have much less (5). Regardless, som
of my documents are large (200+ pages).

Another possible hint to the problem is when I have many document ope
I request to switch to document A, after a long pause it switches me t
document B. I can then switch again to document A which works righ
away.

Also on rare occasions Word will simply crash on me - message saying i
it can run the debugger, at that point it never recovers.

It is a very frustrating experience
