Word 07 Crash and problem

every time i start MS word 07 i get a message that says "Word automatically
saved changes to the Normal document template. Would you like to load them
now?" I have clicked yes, no, and even reinstalled MS Office to try to fix
this problem. It makes it impossible to use previously saved documents and
you can not use the mouse on any new documents to move the cursor. What can
I do to make this stop ? I have also tried deleting the normal.dotm file ---
with no success -- what can I do >>

thank you for that help Graham... I am using vista -- so my screens do not
look like that -- but i think i found my way through it --- also every time i
shut down word it crashes -- any advice on that ??

ok... i did everything i could do that it says on your info page --- the
program functions completely while open in the /a switch -- i have tried to
look on the startup file -- it says there is nothing in it -- i have deleted
all the normal.dot? files on the computer - along with all the temp files --
the first time the program opens -- it opens correctly -- and when you try to
close it -- it locks up -- and auto shuts down -- and then when you open it
the next time you get the "word auto saved a version of the normal template
would you like to use it" box -- and then the program does not function again
-- i am running norton av 2010 with no virus found in the last scan which was
run last night -- any other ideas on what the problem is ?

If the program functions normally with the \a switch (which is the same as
starting Word in safe mode by holding the CTRL key whilst starting) then the
problem is not with the core program but with the user files. The web page
covers all the usual suspects which are

1. The normal template
2. Add-ins
3. The registry data key
4. Conflicting third party applications and drivers.

The normal template for Word 2007 is normal.dotm (normal.dot is for earlier
versions and would not normally be involved). If you have not changed the
location where Word stores its templates you can find it by typing
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Templates
in the Address bar of Windows Explorer or your browser.

Your Word startup folder would be
%appdata%\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

You may also have COM add-ins which you may need to disable from Word
Options > Add-ins

Norton AV has a chequered history with Word. Historically some versions had
had an Office plug-in that causes all kinds of problems and if your version
has such a plug-in then it should be turned off.

I have deleted the "normal" template about 45 times now -- and also all the
temp files that go with it -- for some reason every time i close word it
crashes -- and makes a new "normal" template -- I have closed all add ins --
and have no idea what is making it crash.

This is not simply a question of the normal template. As you are working
with a new default normal template, created by Word when you delete the old
one that is unlikely, to be the issue. Do you have any add-ins installed -
remove them all? Have you rebuilt the data key in the registry? Have you
ensured that Norton AV is not the problem?
You must attend to all the possible issues not simply concentrate on one of
them.
