Word 97 freezes when changing style

Hello,

I am using Word 97 and in a particular document whenever I
try to change the style of a paragraph (changing to
bullets1)by using the style drop down list on the toolbar
the document freezes. If I use the paintbrush to copy the
style from a similar paragraph the document does not
freeze.
Would you know what could cause such behaviour?

the document's internal structure is probably damaged. If you
copy everything EXCEPT the last paragraph mark to a new
document does the problem go away in the new document?
