Styles in Word 2007

M

Mandy

I've created my own heading and bullet Styles in word 2007, however when I
try to 'Motify' a particular style (i.e. bullet style) by changing the
identation in 'Paragraph' it doesn't save my changes when I reopen a new
document.

Is there step by step instructions I need to follow in order to save these
changes.

Your help would be appreciated.

You need to save the modifications to the styles to the template.
When you modify a style in a document, there should be a check box for "Add
to Template" or something like that (not sure with 2007), this will save the
modification to the template.
Or "Open" the template file itself (not just click on it as this will only
open a new document based on the template) and do the neccessary
modifictions, save.
The next time you open a new document based on this template the changes
should be there.
Hope this helps

Note also that indents in numbered/bulleted styles can't be set through the
Paragraph dialog. They have to be set in one of the dialogs for numbered
lists.

Thanks for that - I'll note that for future reference.

Suzanne, I don't think that's right. If you're using styles for your
numbered paragraphs, you can modify the paragraph indentation using the ruler
or right-clicking and selecting paragraph, or any other way you can think of
to change them, and then with your cursor still in the modified paragraph,
right-click on the style in the Quick Styles gallery and update the style "to
match selection," and THEN the change will "stick".... for that document
only, of course, unless you save the modified paragraph style to your
Normal.dotm template.

It might, but I wouldn't count on it. :)

Hmmmm.... I sense some hostility toward Word 2007. ~:) Well, guys, it DOES
work in Word 2007 and we do it all the time. IF you assign styles to your
outline-numbered paragraphs (in our office, we created styles called "Level
1," "Level 2," etc., that are ONLY used for outlined-numbered paragraphs),
and IF you make changes to a styled paragraph and then update the style, the
formatting WILL stick to that style.... unless you change it back. It always
worked in Word 2000 and it still works in Word 2007.

I think "skepticism about your method" would be more accurate than
"hostility toward Word 2007," though I confess I've done the same thing, and
it seemed okay, but I'm so indoctrinated with the method required in
previous versions that I remain skeptical.

There's nothing wrong with a little skepticism, as long as we all keep trying
to help the people who may not be as comfortable about working with styles as
some others of us. Styles are _easy_ and they do the work of formatting your
document for you, but you must be consistent in applying them. Modifying a
styled paragraph and then updating the style works 99.9999% of the time, just
like it's supposed to, whether you're in Word 2000, 2003, or 2007.

Updating the style works--that's true--but in some versions it doesn't work
reliably with *indentation*, which is why we recommend editing the numbered
list properties when changing the indentation for items in an
outline-numbered list.

You're right; IF the number alignment and text indents for an auto-numbered
paragraph (as set by the "Define New Multilevel List" tool) do not match the
paragraph style indent settings, then the alignment/indents settings of the
number itself (as set by the "Define New Multilevel List" tool) _can_
over-ride the paragraph style, especially if a connection between outline
levels breaks and you go back into the D.N.M.L. tool to fix it. But changing
the paragraph style indents and then updating the style DOES work. I tell my
secretaries that after they go into the D.N.M.L. tool and fix something
that's broken, then (1) go back to each style in the document and (2) change
the formatting back the way you want it and then (3) update the style. After
that, the style "sticks" with no problems.
