won't go into standby mode

I have my computer set for the screen saver to deploy in 18 min & to go into
standby in 20 min.
However, for the past several months, the screen saver deploys as it should,
but the computer never goes into standby.

It used to work correctly many months ago.
Did a windows update screw this up?

I've checked & rechecked my settings.
Everything appears to be set correctly.

How can I get the computer to go into standby?

(I'm guessing that it's a laptop.)What Settings did you check ? :
1. Obviously, All Power Options via Control Panel.(for the relevant
hardware profile)
2. BIOS setttings. (important if you flashed your BIOS)
3. Drivers loaded & running (All Devices & related drivers must support
APM/ACPI, - otherwise the system will decline enterering hybernation or
standby)

ad. 3: First check should obviously be inspecting the windows event
log(s) for failure to load driver(s), - like Device Manager should
obviously not show any yellow question marks. Secondly (bit of a long
shot), - in Device Manager's menu, you can choose to show hidden
devices, - which will let you inspect the non-plug&play devices and
their drivers state and conditions for start (i.e. automatic, disabled,
system/boot, ...).

Let me know if above ideas helps or not. :)

those are the settings that I've rechecked too many times
2. BIOS setttings. (important if you flashed your BIOS)

have not flashed bios (can't do something that I don't know how to do)

will try to check out these things

Note: Checking your BIOS settings is pretty easy to do.
If you don't know how to enter your BIOS setup, then take a peak at:

checked all the things you mentioned - no yellow flags or other issues or
anything noticeable to me

OK, One last thing you can check before drilling down into drivers, is
to check the videocard's properties (pick the screen in control
panel, - on the setting tab, click the advanced button). I've got a
"Matrox" card, and that dialog box got a lot of settings ... so
maybe...
Otherwise, consider updating your videodriver - as you stated: "Did a
windows update screw this up?": Well, if that is the case, then maybe
the manufacturer of your video found out and took appropriate
countermeasures (i.e. released a new driver version addressing the
problem).
