WMV file

We have created a website for a 100% volunteer charity dedicated to saving
the lives of children afflicted with Canavan disease. Someone was kind enough
to create a video (a .wmv file) that we would like to add to the website. I
have the file uploaded now to a sub-directory, but haven't created a link to
it yet.

When I type in this link, it takes forever to buffer, download, etc., before
it even starts to play. My understanding is that streaming video would allow
the user to begin buffering the file, but then it would start playing as it
buffers it.

Our ISP tech support told me that all I did not need Flash nor any other
streaming video programs, and that they did not need to do anything special
for WMV type files. (For streaming video they do charge a nominal extra fee.)

We currently have Front Page 4.0, and I have heard that the newest version
of FP contains streaming video functionality.

Do we need streaming video, such as Flash, to play this file properly? The
file is 44.6M - is that too large?

Thank you,

Peggy

Your file is too big. It will eat your bandwidth and most users won't
even bother with it or will get annoyed with your site.

Even with broadband, video clips over the Internet are usually less than
5 MB and usually run for 30 sec to <3 min. If you need moral than that
you need streaming.

You may want to rethink your goals for the video. Fro example, you can
offer the dvd by mail upon request, post a condensed version of it as a
video clip. You can shrink the size of the media file by deleting parts
and saving in lower resolution (you need video editing software for that).

It is possible that your video is too big. Good news through if you have
Windows ME or Windows XP.

Download the movie back to your computer and open Movie Maker (comes with
the OS) and save a few different sized versions to help with download. You
can then offer the various sizes to web surfers. Upload the files and provide
links with the descriptions to each movie- Modem, DSL, Cable.

There is also a FrontPage Windows Media plugin if you wish to indstead embed
the video within a HTML page. Not sure if it will work with your Frontpage
but here is the download page to see if it is compatible.

If not- you can just do as you were but with smaller movies as made in Movie
Maker with various download options.

I use the above with no problem but I see a new one has been released below:

Good luck.
