Has anyone used a wireless router with a Sony Viao
Laptop. Can you enlighten me. I would like to be able
to use my laptop in more than one room in the house.

Thanks!

I don't have a Sony laptop but I do use a wireless
network system. I placed a wireless PCMCIA card in the
notebook which uses my cable interent connection to my
desktop with lightning fast speeds

I use a PCMCIA wireless card (Belkin manufacture) in my Vaio laptop and a
wireless USB adapter on my PC. This fairly basic low level wireless
networking and mine is only connecting at 11Mbs - latest models are up to
56Mbs I think.

It is a bit slow transferring large files but quick enough for wireless
internet access anywhere in the house. My PC is connected to broadband cable
for internet access.

Windows XP can do most of the set up automatically (although things can be a
bit tricky to get working sometimes.) Once it is all working it is stable
and excellent.

For a simple home network it is the only way to go - no more wires!

Go for it.

The major vendors, e.g. Linksys, Netgear, etc. all have very good
material published on their web sites explaining how to decide what to
buy, how to setup, etc.

I've set up a wired router and a wireless access point to do what you want
to do. I'm very pleased with the results. Now I can spend even more time on
the computer, anywhere in the house or yard!

My suggestion is to get the 54G equipment. No sense going with yesterday's
speeds, they will only go up.
