Wireless problem and SP2

I don't know if this is the best place to post this but here goes. I
have a Toshiba notebook running XP Pro. I have a Linksys wireless card
and it has all been running great for quite some time.

I had read about wireless problems and SP2 but wanted to get the
upgrade to SP2. So I read carefully about preparing the upgrade and it
all appeared to go fine. And when I was done and finished tweaking the
Security Center - it all appeared to be fine.

But it turns out that I can only keep a connection for five minutes. I
then lose it and can repair and am good for another five minutes. This
happens every single time without exception.

I have made sure Wireless Zero Configuration is turned on and set to
automatic. I also tried disabling all security on the network and that
didn't make a difference. I have Windows firewall disabled and even if
I disable my own regular firewall - that too does not matter.

Obviously if I can't fix this I guess the only option is to uninstall
SP2 - I don't really want to do that but can't keep operating like
this. Any other ideas?? TIA.

Under the Authentication tab for your card, do you have 'Enable IEEE 802.1x
authentication for this network" checked? Try unchecking it and see if this
stops the disconnection.

I've got my Toshiba notebook (using a wireless bus card) running with
SP2 and my wireless router. No software installed for the router or
the bus card. Works perfectly.

I have SP2 installed on my notebook and use an IO data wireless card. I
haven`t had any problems with the card drivers. You might just need to try
to re-install them or try letting windows manage the wireless card as
previously suggested.

I do not have that checked so that isn't it.

I am already letting XP manage the connection - I have no Linksys
software installed on my Toshiba.

Thanks to all who have tried to help so far. One other thing - I don't
know if it could be significant - is that the systray connection icon
often has a red x, even when the connection is ok. Sometimes the red x
goes away - and then it just comes back - no pattern that I can figure
out.

The regularity of the timing has me suspicious. As I indicated, the
stoppage happens every single time - after what seems like an
identical time period. Makes me think there is some setting somewhere
that is set to time my connection out - can't find it and can't
imagine what it might be - but it is odd - and maybe that is
significant somehow.

I do not have that checked so that isn't it.

Find and turn off any "power saving" features for
the card.

Right click connection icon in Systray>>
Status>>Properties>>under "Connect using" make
sure the WiFi card is selected>>Configure>>
Power Management>>uncheck "Allow the computer
to turn off this device to save power"

Let us know what happens-

Have you called Linksys? They walked me through some changes to the router
settings that helped.

Check Event Viewer (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative
Tools -> Event Viewer) for possible errors.

Check Device Manager for unknown/improperly installed devices.
Install/update drivers as needed.

Install a fresh driver (wireless card) and firmware (WAP/router).

Good Luck!

Well yep - that fixed it! Makes sense but I just wasn't thinking about
that - and no wonder it was happening like it was on a clock. Many,
many thanks - and that also took care of the red x problem - could
have lived with that - but it's nice not to have that.

With much gratitude,

Glad you got it sorted out and also thanks for posting back with the
results - it could help more people who might be dealing with similar
issues.
