Wireless Networking crashing....I think.

Hi all,

I have two computers:
- Desktop with Windows XP Home.
- Laptop with Windows XP Pro

I am using the Netgear DG84G Wireless ADSL Router to connect both machines.

I have set it up through the networking wizards.

The ADSL Router is configured to use WEP Encryption.

Problem is that when I use one PC to transfer a lot of files to the other,
at some point my desktop PC seems to lose the connection to the wireless
network and the transfer crashes.

Any idea as to the root of the problem?

Cheers,

Kalten~!!!

Hi,

Thanks for that. Is it a problem with wireless networking in general?

The disconnection occurs after I have transferred around 3 MP3 files.

I want to copy around 2G of files from one machine to another.

My laptop is wired - if I make my desktop wired as well, it seems pointless
doing the wireless networking thing.

I guess it means I also need to get a network card for my desktop -
currently using a Wireless USB adapter (Netgear WG121).

Is there an easy way to connect two PCs together for a one off transfer of
files?

Cheers,

Kalten~!!!

I can't even find this adapter on there site, check for
updates, firmware for your access point and drivers for
the card. remember that wireless connection get allot of
interference from different devices, such as cell phones.
they also have limitations in the distance apart.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry - the product is the DG834G wireless router modem. It has the latest
patch which includes a BIOS update - I downloaded it and installed it
yesterday.

I also am using the Wireless Adapter WG121 and have installed the latest
software which includes a BIOS updated.

I have, from reading various posts, also added a password to each of my
Windows XP accounts on both machines.

They both belong to the same workgroup.

Still, whilst both of them have absolutely no trouble connecting to the
internet no matter how large the download, they have problems copying files
from one machine to another.

I guess the next step to try is to install a wired network into my desktop
so that both machines are wired, move my router upstairs and put both
machines side-by-side to take out the 'wireless' bit and see whether it is a
network problem or a wireless problem.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Cheers,

Kalten~!!!
