Wireless USB Adaptor - help

I have just started using a netgear wireless router (NetGear DG834G Wireless
ADSL Modem/Router & Firewall 802.11g ). My Lap top works fine but my PC
doesn't. I have a Netgear WG111 v2 USB adaptor for my PC. The wireless
network is recognised and the signal strength is very good but explorer won't
connect. If I hard wire to the router it works fine. Someone has suggested it
might be the XP firewall which is reventing USB traffic. Is this so ? and
what do I have to do to get it working ?

It's unlikely to be the firewall, as that would also affect a hard wired
link.
I had a similar problem with my setup, but the other way round.
The desktop PC worked fine, the laptop could see the wireless network,
but wouldn't connect to it.
I checked that it worked hard-wired, then disabled the firewall, etc.
Eventually, I tracked it down to an incorrect wireless network setting on
the laptop.
It's tedious because there are so many pages on the wireless properties
dialog, but I suggest you double check them carefully.
