Hello,
I have a lap top that I take to school they have a free wireless network
that you can use. My computer will say that it is connected but will not
connect to explorer, yahoo or aol. Why wont it connect to these programs?
The wireless network is connected and strongly according to icon. It used to
connect but since I been back this fall it will not.

Right-click on the wireless network icon on the right of your taskbar,
select "View Available Wireless Networks" and make sure you are connecting
to the right one.

Also, if you are connected to the right one, try disconnecting and
reconnecting using the menu choices on that display. Perhaps they changed
the passcode since you last used it.

I have tried that several times and it still doesnt work. There was never a
code that they gave us. For example my yahoo would automatically connect
when I turned on my computer.

The subject of the post says "won't" connect to internet provider"? What do
you mean by that? What internet provider, what happens specifically? Have
you pinged the provider? What do you mean by "will not connect to explorer,
yahoo or aol" Which explorer - windows explorer, internet explorer, msn
explorer? What version? You don't connect to "explorer". A browser is
opened and then you connect through the browser to a web site. What happens
when you open "explorer"? By yahoo and aol are these the respective
websites or instant messengers or what? What happens when you try - any
error messages, etc?

Even though the school might have a wireless network in
operation and the laptop shows up as being connected, the
school is only providing a gateway to the Internet. Most
schools make the connectivity good only for faculty, staff
and [registered] students who have logons to the school's
gateway server. What is your status at the school and are
you currently a registered user with a valid logon to the
server?

While you have the reported "excellent" connection...

Go to a command line and type:

ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt

This will produce a file called ipconfig.txt holding the contents of the
ipconfig /all command.

Copy this file's contents and paste it into this newsgroup for evaluation.

And how is that going to help ? The Wireless connection reports that it has
successfully connected to the access point and that means it has been
assigned a valid IP address by the DHCP server.

OP: Please make sure that you have valid credentials with your schools
network in order to gain access to the public internet.

Are you sure the wireless network is connected to the Internet? It might
just be a network for your convenience to save to school servers or print
to school printers without having to deal with cables.

And how is that going to help ?

I'm betting that she is not getting an IP address.

No. You read her post wrong. She did not say that. She said, exactly...
"will say that it is connected". That's all she said.
and that means it has been assigned a valid IP address by the DHCP
server.

Except that she did not say that.
