Adding laptop to wireless network

B

Bobby

I have established a wireless network at home. It consists of a modem-router
connected to an ADSL connection. My desktop PC, notebook computer and
daughter's notebook are all connected and working. My network is not
secured. The connected computers use a mix of Windows and proprietary
software to drive the wireless network devices (my desktop uses a relatively
old Belkin wireless adaptor that only seems to work using the supplied
driver).

My wife bought a notebook today. It comes with built-in wireless. But I
can't connect it to the Internet. It connects to my wireless network OK
(according to the icon in the system tray it connects at 54Mbps) but I can't
connect to the Internet nor do I see any workgroup computers when I look in
Network Places (I get a message: "Home (my network name) is not accessible.
You might not have permissions...").

Help! Any advice would be appreciated!

Cheers.

Hello Bobby,

Check in the Control Panel of your wife's laptop. Select Security Center and
make sure the firewall is not on. The XP firewall sometimes conflicts with a
router. Let me know if it helps...

Also check to see if you have a valid IP address assigned to your new
laptop. Start/run/cmd & type ipconfig /all

I tried everything - and I sort of know what I'm doing - but couldn't figure
out the problem. Connecting a wireless laptop to a wireless network is
usually very straight-forward.

The problem was caused by Norton Internet Security. As soon as I suspended
this service, it detected the UPnP and connected to the Internet.

Thank you Symantec and PC World for selling a wireless laptop that was
disabled from connecting to a wireless network due the security software.

I have removed NIS and installed McAfee anti-virus and firewall software.

Thanks to those who tried to help.

Well, at least it *was*, 100% secure :)
