why is my wireless icon gray even though i'm connected wirelessly?
how can i disconnect when xp thinks i'm already disconnected (even
though, clearly, i'm not)? do i have do disable it through the device
manager? i actually tried doing that and then when i tried to
reconnect i got the following error:

It is not possible to connect at this time. No network was detected.
You may need to plug in your network cable to complete the connection.

it's as though windows xp is confusing the wireless adapter with the
wired one.

any ideas as to how to fix this problem without rebooting?

More detail on the make and module of wireless adapter that you are
using is required so as to give you a more details solution.

This is a general solution

Wireless adapters can be controlled by either Windows XP Wireless Zero
Configuration system or the wireless adapter manufacturer's bundled
management tool. You can not use both at the same time but both
systems can have an icon displayed.

I use Windows XP's Wireless Zero Configuration.

No that's not what he was asking. What hardware do you use? Is your
wireless card a Netgear or Syslink card, or is this a laptop with WiFi
built in? If it's a laptop, what's the make and model?

I use Windows XP's Wireless Zero Configuration.

I know that Linksys wireless adapter will install their own management
tool. Then, when you switch over to Wireless Zero Configuration, the
Linksys management will be "greyed out."
