Wireless capability dissappearing....

L

LetsGoBuffs

I leave my house on saturday and the wireless was working on the computer. I
get to Atlanta and the wireless in the hotel works. Im in Buffalo the next
night and they do not have wireless in the hotel rooms. Although I was
getting a signal from the lobby of the hotel I turned off the wireless
because the signal was worthless. I connected to the wired HS internet.

The next night I am in Boston. The hotel does not have wireless so I leave
the wireless switch in the off position and connect to the internet via cable
again. Last night I am in Baltimore. This hotel has wireless only. I turn
on my wireless switch and nothing.

The light remains amber, as if the switch is in the off position (it should
be blue when the switch is on).

"HP Wireless Assistant" will not open. The normal icons for the wireless
system that are usually on the tool bar on the lower right hand side of the
screen are gone.

"Network Connections" no longer displays anything related to wireless.....um
anything.....

Virus scan came up with nothing. Update came up with nothing. The wireless
system was working not two days ago. I am at home again and I have nothing.
My wifes computer is getting the signal without a problem. My wireless
switch is ON and the light is still amber. Its as if the wireless system of
my computer dissappeared.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Sounds as if the switch has a problem.

Sounds as if the switch has a problem.
But does that explain why I dont still have the wireless icons on the
toolbar and the other problems that I listed?

The reason I ask is that even if I had the switch in the OFF position prior
to this problem, I would still have all of the icons, could access
information about the wireless system ect. Now, I dont have anything.

If the switch was "telling" the system it was just OFF regardless of
position, would the rest of the system not operate as normal? Meaning I
could get signal strength, see the wireless icon on the "Network Connections"
page ect as I always have, even if the system is OFF?

Im just asking. I definitly appriciate your help. Could it be a software
problem? Does my computer think I dont have wireless?

It may not be the switch but the drivers.

This happens sometimes on my old Thinkpad. The driver will fail, and the
wireless adapter will disappear from Network Connections, but the icons
remain - but don't work. A full power-off reboot or two will bring it all
back online.

I'm not sure what it is that has caused it, and reinstalling the driver
hasn't helped. Replacing the system has, though.

How do you switch the wireless on/off? You can disable / eable the
wireless adapter in Network Connections.

network connections no longer displays anything to do with wireless in any
manner.

Go to the HP.com/support page and download any driver updates for your system.
This is generally an indication of missing drivers.

Seems to be a common problem ( Hardware ). Over the past week I've
worked on two very recent HP notebooks where the Wireless stopped
working. Toggling the switch does nothing. On one notebook wireless
seems to start/stop working at random intervals. I'd suspect a defective
wireless on the motherboard. Call HP & request an RMA if it's still
under warranty ( Specify you will NOT accept factory refurbished ).
