WinXP will not update to SP1

I have tried several times this year to upgrade my
windows xp with the
service pack 1a. When it is completed and I reboot, I
get no icons on the
desk top and am unable to do anything. The mouse
pointer works but that is
it. Once I uninstall the windows XP Service Pack 1,
everything works fine
again!
I am running a Sony PCV-RX670. I have decided I will
not try to upgrade
this again but am curious why I am getting this problem.

You should be running SP1, it includes MANY security and application fixes,
try this...

Line 195 (right column) "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar"

Install the fix, then reboot your computer.
