Is Product Key SP1 or SP2?

Hi. I am re-installing XP Home from a generic Windows XP Disk onto an older
machine. It has the product key on the side of the PC. But how can I tell if
the product key is for Service Pack 1 version or Service Pack 2? I have had
this problem many times and noted that service pack 1 product keys will not
work on a fresh service pack 2 installation. I was wondering if there is a
way to tell from the product key?

There is no way to tell. However, the product key should
work with any generic OEM Windows Home Edition CD.

Cheers for the reply. I have just re-installed XP SP2 from the Gold disk and
the product key didn't work. So I re-installed using another Gold disk with
SP1 and the product key worked! This happens to me a lot and sometimes the
other way around. Any suggestions? Many thanks
