Product Key Problem

Hi. I just borrowed a laptop from a friend of mine. I'm trying to install
Windows XP Home SP2 (one CD with XP Home plus Service Pack 2) on it. The
laptop has a product key on the bottom for "Windows XP Home", but it come up
as "not valid" when I tried it. Are product keys specific to a particular
version of XP Home? Thanks.

Yes, product keys are specific to the type of installation that was done.
For example - If the laptop had and OEM version of XPHome with SP1a, then you
must use a product key for the OEM version of XPHome SP1a.

In order to upgrade it to SP2, you'll have to either visit Windows Update -
or download/order the SP2 CD and install it that way.
