WinXP suddenly asking me to logon

J

Joe S.

I have owned my HP notebook for almost a year; running WinXP Home Edition.

A couple of days ago I was using it and the battery ran out -- the computer
went into hibernation. I plugged it in and let the battery recharge.

Now, when I turn it on, it goes through the normal boot routine, then, it
goes to the logon screen and asks me for a password. I click OK and it goes
to the desktop. However, it has never done this before -- I don't want to
screw around logging on.

How do I make it stop asking me to log on when it boots? Does this
regardless of whether I turn it off and boot cold or do a restart.

Thanks.

I have done this and it makes no difference -- damn thing is still asking me
to log in:

Control Panel>Display>Screen Saver>Uncheck the box about logging on after
shutdown or whatever it is.
Control Panel>Power Options>Advanced>Uncheck the box about logging on after
hibernate or whatever it is.

to solve this all you would do is logon go to control
panel then users and the click on change how users logon
if the welcome screen is not checked chk it and u can also
chk fast switch if you want that will eliminate the logon
screen

None of that worked. I checked and unchecked Use Welcome Screen and Fast
Switch -- makes no difference.

Thanks.

Click Start, select Run and enter the following in the run box:

control userpasswords2

This will bring up an alternate view of user accounts management. On the
Users tab remove the check from the line that reads "Users must enter a
user name and password to use this computer" and click Apply. When you do
you will be prompted for a user name and password that will be
automatically logged on to the machine.

Thanks -- but -- that didn't work either.

After following the procedures you outlined, now when the computer boots, I
get a warning that the computer could not log me on. I click OK then it
goes back to the log on screen where I double -click on the "Owner" icon and
then it goes to the desktop.

Thanks anyway.

Well, now it's totally screwed up. I cannot get into the machine.

When I boot up from cold start, I get the Windows XP screen, it goes blank,
then a blue screen appears with a login box that says:
User Name: administrator
Password:

When I hit OK without a password, I get the following error:
"Unable to log you on because of an account restriction."

When I enter the password that I entered after going to "control
userpassword2," I get a long error message:
"The system cannot log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are
correct, then type your password again. Letters in password must be typed
using the correct case."

Now what?

J

Joe S.

Okay, now I can get into the machine. When the logon box appears, I change
"Administrator" to "Owner" and click OK -- it does not need a password.

I want the damn thing to do what it did before -- just go straight to the
desktop, no logon required, don't even want to see the logon box.

Then in control userpasswords2, enter Owner as the name when prompted and
leave the password blank.

I mentioned to another user that if you use Tweak UI or any other
tweaking program, look under the logon tab and uncheck log on when
system restarts. I had your problem and found this to be the solution....

Yesterday I started my laptop, checked e-mail surfed the web and installed MS Project 2003 and I shut my laptop down. Later I turned on my laptop and I was prompted to "LOGIN" but the screen did not display a login ID. I am the only user of this laptop. I use a DSL Connection. I hit CTL-ALT-DEL twice and I then received a Log On screen. I tried my DSL and Outlook Logons/PWs as well as a website logon/PW with no success
WHAT IS WRONG
I really don't want to use the 7 CDs to restore the original sw, then load all my office sw and other programs and then download and install all the MS patches and updates.
What do I do to correct this problem?

Log in as Administrator. As you don't say what version you are using, in
Home, boot into Safe Mode. In Pro, at the Welcome Screen press Ctl-Alt-Del
twice. If your XP was pre-installed then it's 99.99% certain there is no
password. Then go to Control Panel-Users and see what's happened.

SEVEN CDs? What the hell have you got on there? XP comes on ONE cd.

Thank you Rifleman
I have an HP laptop and the system restore CDs (I may be wrong, maybe there is only five CDs, but it is a pain to rebuild the damn thing) contain the XP OS and the HP crap with the generic SW all lumped together. I have a copy of XP but it is an upgrade CD from a previous Desktop I had.

Dud the Administrator Log-on solve the problem?
