WINXP: MSG.EXE can't send message to another PC

Hi folks.

I've got 2 PCs, both running Windows XP, connected using
D-Link wireless network cards.

I initially had problems getting them to see each other
(only one PC seemed to see the other, and this randomly
changed) which I think was fixed by me giving PC#1 a
static IP address, and telling PC#2 to get the IP address
from PC#1 (both were generating random IP addresses for
themselves to start off with, I think) or it was only
after PC#2 had its WinXP licence registered...

Anyway, after finally getting the two networked, and
getting encryption going between the two (but only the
smaller encryption - the larger just didn't seem to want
to work), then Internet connection sharing, and PC#2 to
get PC#1 to automatically dial up the ISP, I now have one
little niggle.

I'm trying to use the MSG.EXE utility from a DOS box (oh
sorry, new-fangled MS terminology, a "Command prompt") to
send a message from PC#1 to PC#2 or vice-versa.

I can get each PC to send a message to its own "console",
but I get a "* does not exist or is disconnected"
response when I try to send a message to the other PC.

Each PC can clearly see whether or not the other PC is
up, because I get a "Error opening Terminal server PC#2"
and a "Error [1722]:The RPC server is unavailable"
message from PC#1 if I try to send a message to PC#2 when
it is switched off (and vice versa).

I can quite happily ping each PC from the other, so I'm
guessing it's some kind of security or permissions issue;
I've looked in even viewer, but the only events which
appear are those on startup and shutdown, and no security
failures during uptime.

Any suggestions as to where to look? I've tried Google,
Usenet groups, even Microsoft Knowledge Base, and none
have similar problems.

Any (helpful) advice greatfully received!!
