WINXP chkdsk /f error

R

Rana

Good afternoon all:

I tried to run defrag from the accessories menu but it gives me an
error stating the partition is in use and to run chkdsk /f. When I do
that I get the following msg: The type of file is NTFS cannot
lock...the drive is in use do you want it to run during startup (y/n)

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rana,
That's a pretty common message - it just means that CHKDSK can't gain
exclusive access to that volume, and it doesn't want to run until it can.
That's why it's asking if you want to schedule CHKDSK to run at the next
system startup - it can get the disk access it needs then.

Go ahead and give Y, then reboot to run the CHKDSK as the machine starts
up again
