Chkdsk /f error when trying to run defrag in WINXP

Good afternoon all:

I tried to run defrag from the accessories menu but it
gives me an error stating the partition is in use and to
run chkdsk /f. When I do that I get the following msg:
The type of file is NTFS cannot lock...the drive is in
use do you want it to run during startup (y/n)

Please help

Thanks in advance

Hi;
You have experienced designed behaviour. The system will not allow
modification of the file structure while it is being used and chkdsk will
potentially modify that basic structure. And defrag will not run as long
as there are errors in the basic file system since to do so might render
that system inoperable.

So, you will have to do what is suggested.

Go to Start Run and type chkdsk/f into the slot. Press enter. You will
get a message about running chkdsk when the system restarts. Next,
restart the system. After chkdsk has run, windows will start. Then, run
defrag.

OR do what you did before and press Y. Upon restart and chkdsk running,
defrag should run. If it does not, start is yourself.

Let us know.
