Please help - Chkdsk error

My backup program does not want to create an image of my C: drive because
it says it contains errors. When I run "chkdsk c:" I get:
...
CKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)...
Security descriptor verification completed.
Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

So then I run: chkdsk c: /f and I get:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

If I choose Y and then reboot chkdsk runs but does not find any problem.
Then, after the reboot is complete I run chkdsk again and the problem is
still there. I have also tried the /R and /X parameters with the same
results.

Many tahnks for any help.

You could download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard disk
manufacturer's web site. That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot
from that and run the diagnostics to check the health of the drive.

You could also try running chkdsk from the recovery console. Boot from the
XP CD, take the first R for repair, enter the number for the Windows
Installation, normally 1, then enter the password assigned to the built in
Administrator account. For XP Home by default unless changed it is blank so
just press enter. At the command line give the command:
chkdsk /p

/p replaces /f in the recovery console - why? I don' know.

By the way what is the backup program? Maybe someone else has had
experience with it. Have you checked with their tech support on this issue?
