we have a customer who is running about 20 clients
running windows xp and office xp on a windows2K server,
exchange network ... We have been running great for
years, one client has just w/in the last few days having
problems opening files locally and on the network. The
issue is when you open Word, PP, Excel and go to "file"
then "open" it hangs for as long as 20 seconds on the
drop down. In explorer i can fly to any drive, open any
file with the greatest of ease ... but, the office
applications are the only applications that hang up when
you try to open files ... DNS, WINS are all correct, it's
not a network issue, because i can open the files w/ the
greatest of speed in a browser or explorer ... Have run
the latest office updates and am now at a dead end. any
thoughts are greatly appreciated in advance ... also, i
removed the registry setting in here: http://www.experts-
exchange.com/Networking/WinNT_Networking/Q_20785704.html
with not success .... if i try to move to quickly on
opening i get the usual "error" report from MS and do i
want to send it, it basically says "winword.exe ..
hungapp" ...

Try to open Winword with the /x command. This will open it "clean", try to
repro your issue. If that works fine remove Word ADD-INS or Macros or Office
Startup programs.
