Help with error - At the end of my rope

A

Adam Raff

Good Day,

About a year ago a user that we have started having problems with
unexplained errors as the system would crash. I looked over the system and
tried a few things to no avail. I decided to redo the system from scratch.
I reformatted the drive and reinstalled XP Pro from scratch then applied SP2
and other updates.

The errors came back, so I called Dell and after weeks of playing games they
swapped out systems. We got a Dell Precession 470. I updated the bios and
installed a clean copy off XP again. After checking the memory with a couple
of programs to make sure it was solid. Installed the latest SP and updates
and made sure that I did not install anything out of the ordinary to keep
the system clean for testing.

The system is running XP Pro SP2 with all updates.
IE is 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519
Cipher strength 128
Updated version sp2

We have typical programs that we run on all the systems with no issues which
includes Office 2003, SQL client and AutoDesk 3Ds Max.

Nothing way out or so I think.

Out of the blue again he starting locking up again. Below are the errors
from the event log.

To be honest I just do not know how to proceed in trouble shooting this
issues any more. I have done everything that I can think of. I know or
feel it may be a program but there is nothing on the system that is not on
another one of our systems. If anybody has any ideas or clues please help.

Thanks

(snip long log that basically shows Internet Explorer to be crashing
constantly)

I'd look to the network hardware from the workstation to the
switch/router/whatever you're using, including the cable. Otherwise, it
has to be something that the user is doing. Installing malware perhaps?

Create another account on the system and use that for a while to see if
the same problem occurs.

I'm just throwing out ideas here, but the method behind this is that
since you have a new machine and the old problems are recurring, either
something in the physical workspace environment is the cause or it is
your user.

They all seem related to Internet Explorer. Have a look at installed
programs that interact with internet explorer and the internet in general.
Browser helper objects that sort of thing. Even ones you assume are ok, you
need to disable or uninstall untill you get to the bottom of the problem.
You also absolutley have to run the necessary antivirus and antispyware
updated and actually used. If you use free antispyware make sure you run
three or more. Hijackthis is a good place to start as it will generate a
log that can be used to troubleshoot.

Internet Explorer is generally quite stable so it must either be software
interaction or a hardware problem and you say you already exchanged the
computer for a different one so you have to look at software. I am assuming
the problems with the old system and this one are the same. If the problems
are the same then its most likey software (malware or general bad program)
if the problem are different then you also need to look at the hardware
maybe swapping componants like memory for known good ones.

To be honest I just do not know how to proceed in trouble shooting this
issues any more. I have done everything that I can think of. I know or
feel it may be a program but there is nothing on the system that is not on
another one of our systems. If anybody has any ideas or clues please help.

Thanks
Adam Raff

The most common cause seems to be overheating and memory problems.
Check to see that all the internal fans are working correctly and not clogged or obstructed.
Reseat the memory, or try 1 stick at a time.
Leave the case cover off to see if it runs cooler and stops freezing.

You can also try this to see if it works:
Try lowering the "Hardware Accelerator" setting a notch or two.
Right-click the desktop, select Properties. Click the "Settings" tab.
Click the "Advanced" button, click the "Troubleshoot" tab.

Hi All,

Glad to see knowledge sharing here.

Based on my experience, it appears to be a hardware issue. At system side,
I think following steps can be of assistance:

1. Checking Virus and spyware.
2. Create a new user account.
3. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking.
4. May you can try to run "SFC/scannow"

Hope the information helps.

Best regards,

Vincent Xu

For those who responded Thank You,

When it comes to the Hardware the memory is fine, I ran tests on the system
before I did anything to make sure the memory was solid this included the
HD.

I do not think it's a hardware issue per say. After going over the ideas I
am going to look at the follow to start

Video Driver and Network driver
IE and any helper program
Spyware (we run antivirus software so I know it's not a virus)

I did change a setting on the switch that the computer connects to and will
see if that helps

If the problem persists after the above then I will do the following
SFC/ Scannow to see if the program is damaged
Create a new profile

The user said that it seems to happen when the following programs are open,
IE, Outlook 2003, Photoshop and 3Ds Max

Outlook is always open.

If anybody else has any other ideas or have heard of anything please let me
know. I will keep you posted on this as time goes by.

Thanks Again for you help.
