Is the server dual homed (more than one NIC)? If so, that can be
problematic.

When you manually add the server by name, does it connect? How about when
you add it's IP address?

Did you also reinstall the service pack after installing WINS, unless you
used an SP4 integrated i386 source (or whatever service pack you are using)?

Thanks a lot

I think i am having the first problem u mentioned..more than one
NIC..Since I am using VMWare and trying this WINS installation on
Win2000 at VMWare machine. Any suggestions for that.

I tried rest of the two..but same error.

Try it with one NIC. MultiNICs are always problematic with numerous services
including AD, DNS and WINS, unless the machine is purely routing or
performing NAT services and nothing else. That is because of the multiple
IPs registering.

Otherwise, I'm not sure about VMWare. I'm more familiar with VPC. I think I
remember someone posting an issue concerning connectivity VMWare and
Windows, but I can't recall. I would probably suggest the VMWare forums:
