DNS & WINS

Hi I have some confusion regarding Wins & Dns on a 2000 server. I though
that dns replaced wins if you were only using XP Pro clients on the network.
Howerver unless Wins is installed you cannot access other workstations by
machine name. Each PC on all networks we manage have the following config :

fixed IP's
NIC dns - point to server
D/g point to internet router
within wins tab - enable ntebios over tcp/ip

It is really only a problem when sharing printers as the machines can see
other but can't access any shares.
As soon as I install wins serve it all works OK. I'm worried what will
happen if MS ditch Wins.

Thanks for any comments

Andy

Hello, it should be no problem, WINS can still be needed today over
WAN-links etc to get the browser list work in every subnet/site. Check your
DNS zone for your domain and also the event logg, of coruse you have to
leave netbios over tcp/ip enabled.
