Wingman Extreme Digital joystick problem

Hi all,

I've just got a Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital from a friend, it's
an old model with a gameport connector, no USB. According to a couple
of newsposts and websites Windows XP should detect the joystick
automaticly, but I don't seem to get it working.
I've bought a cheap PCI soundcard just for the gameport because I
didn't have one and I don't have a game/MIDI bracket for my ASUS
P4P800 motherboard.
XP recognizes the soundcard and gameport (In Device Manager it shows
as "Standard game port") just fine without any conflicts. But when I
go to Control Panel -> Game Controllers there is no controller listed.
I've tried rebooting a couple times and also adding the joystick in
Game Controllers by selecting it under the Add button, but still no
succes. After adding it nothing seems to happen allthough after a
while XP says "Finnished installing new device, to complete
installation restart your computer now", after reboot there's still no
controller listed. Even installing the latest Logitech software or
soundcard drivers doesn't help.

Any help with this would be very welcome.

Thanx,

J-P

Hi J-P,

So far you've done everything properly. Updating your
sound card drivers would have been my first suggestion.

Since you have done that, try adding the Wingman again
try both choices: Extreme, and Digital.Auto Detect.

If that doesn't solve it, and if I was facing that problem,
I would get rid of the cheap sound card and out of date
gameport controller, and get a USB one controller. It
will cost the same or less, but in the game you'll enjoy
better performance since you'll be using less resources.

The two most common causes for the behavior you describe is exatly the
reason gameport technology died. The first is that gameports don't play well
together. If you have an gameport on your motherboard it needs to be
disabled. Sometimes there will be one on an onboard soundcard but not an
actual connector, so you might want to check the BIOS to be sure. The second
issue is that when cost corners are cut to save on manufacturing it is often
in hte gameport area first. This leads to unstable data transfer and either
no connection or worse yet connections that come and go with how much sound
is being processed. Personally I would second Jimmy's recomendation that you
take the sound card back and get a USB device.

Thanx,

Jimmy:
I've tried both extreme and digital.auto detect. Both give the same,
no, result. Although the 'auto detect' disapeared from the digital
line after the first try, it only shows digital now.
I forgot to mention it but before buying the cheap soundcard I bought
a USB to gameport converter. After connecting the converter and
joystick I saw the converter listed under Game Controller. I could
callibrate it but couldn't get reaction from the throttle and both
buttons on the base of the joystick and the directioncontrol was
totaly off. So I returned the converter an got myself the soundcard
instead.

Joshua:
The first thing I did after starting my computer back up after
inserting the soundcard was disabling the onboard gameport in my BIOS.
So that shouldn;t be the problem. Although it might be the case that
the onboard sound messes things up.

At least thanx for your reactions and help. Í'm going to try get a
result with the older drivers that came with the joystick originaly,
if my friend still has them. If not I'll return the soundcard and
maybe get myself and new USB joystick.

J-P
