WindowsXP SP1 install problems

When trying to download and install windows updates, why
do more than 1/2 of them fail to install???? How come
when I attempt to download and install Windows Service
Pack 1 from the Microsoft Windows Update website it gives
me some error message.

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the file
update.inf. make sure the cryptographic service is
running on this computer"

What the hell is cryptographic service? Can't find any
file labeled update.inf when doing search of C: drive.
Don't have a clue why this is all happening.

It is a misleading message. Rename the folder
windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. That will generate a new, clean
folder, and you can then delete the renamed one.

Then get - only - Q817287 and install it, which should now be OK. It
is the cure for the problem: you should then be able to carry on with
other updates, and the problem will not recur
