Windows XP TCPIP software problem encounted when adding new cable modem internet

M

Martha Healy

I previously used my ethernet card to connect to an older
computer in my home, but my road runner cable internet
service now needs to use it to connect the external cable
modem. The problem is, the existing local network
connection will not autoconfigure the correct IP address to
connect to the internet through the cable, after numerous
disable, enable, repair, and command mode ipconfig
commands. Do I need to reinstall Windows XP to get the
tcp/ip numbers for this connection to reset? Is there any
way to delete and readd the local connection? I even took
out the card and restarted the computer, but the old
connection still existed.
Help!

try this first. quoted from http://www25.brinkster.com/ChicagoTech

For XP, you can't uninstall TCP/IP (Uninstall is grayed out). You will use
the Windows XP command line utility netsh.exe to reset all IP-related
Registry settings to their default values. To do that, enter the command:
netsh int ip reset filename, for example, netsh int ip reset ipreset.t.xt.

Unplug the cable modem for 2 minutes,(POWER CORD UNPLUG) then plug back in,
reboot system and it should work just fine.
