Cannot connect to cable modem

Started a new account with Cox Cable high-speed internet (previously used DSL
& router). My comp will not connect with router. Here are some facts:

-I've removed all DSL/router hardware and deleted the DSL connecton.
-Cox says my cable internet signal is fine. Internet lights on the cable
modem light up solid. I have provided Cox with the MAC address for the modem.
-The modem is a brand new Linksys BEFCMU10.
-I am connecting the modem to my comp via ethernet cable.
-Doing an ">ipconfig" DOS command shows an IP Adress and Subnet Mask as
0.0.0.0.
-Doing an ">ipconfig /renew" command shows error message: "An error occured
while renewing interface Local Area Connection : The RPC server is
unavailable."
-Local Area Connection icon in my system tray is stuck on the horizontal
blinking thing with "acquiring network address" always pesent.
-The modem does appear as a network adapter in the Device Manager window.

I'm lost and Cox and Linksys have given up on me. Thanks for any help.

"I have provided Cox with the MAC address for the modem."

In my one and thankfully only experience with Cox, they wanted the MAC
address of the ethernet adapter in the computer.

Thanks, I'll look into that.
