Windows XP Startup Error/problem

Hi, hope someone can help us out. Whenever we log on we get the following
message:

cannot find c:/windows/system32/services/y.exe'

Did not have this at first, then maybe a year later this started to appear
everytime we log on.

Our Dell support just tells us to reinstall our windows, but can anyone tell
me if there is a simpler way to fix this without having to back up all our
files and reinstall windows?

Thanks!

Scan your system with latest versions of Adaware/Spybot Search and
Destroy/CWShredder.Run them in safe mode.

That is a typical tech method of curing an ingrowing toenail with a leg
transplant.

You have some piece of malware hiding in that file, and a clean up tool
has removed the file, but not the reference trying to load it at boot.
Start - Run - MSConfig.exe and look on the Startup page for a line
referring to it in the Command column (you may need to drag the divider
to the right to get enough width). Uncheck the line. Exit - do not
bother to reboot, but next time you do there will be a message about
'System Configuration'. Check the 'Do not show again' box and exit
