windows startup problems

my gateway laptop won't startup. i get the message:
windows cannot start because following file is missing or corrupted,

windows\system32\config\system

i did a complete reinstall with OEM cd from gateway and still get message.
now sometimes when i just hit enter it boots up normally. other times I shut
computer off manually and then restart and it will boot up normally. but
there are other times that the message will just keep appearing and computer
does boot. did I do something wrong during installation? is there a way to
fix this without having to reinstall again.

thank you

This sounds a lot like a hard drive that is going bad. The area that
contains the system registry is getting weak and a reinstall simply
puts a new system registry on the same weak sectors of the disk
drive. Does a shutdown followed by an immediate restart usually work
whereas leaving the drive sit overnight then rebooting usually causes
problems? I spent weeks once doing several reinstalls from scratch
before finally replacing the hard drive after which the problem
simply disappeared. I would replace the hard drive and try once
again.

Good Luck,
John

Is the OEM cd one that came with the computer?

Try HD Tune. It only gives information and does not fix any
problems.

Download and run it and see what it turns up. You want HD Tune
(freeware) version 2.55 not HD Tune Pro (not Freeware) version 3.00.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

Can you please post a copy of what appears in the Info tab of H D Tune?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

You right click on the Report in the list and select Properties. In the
window, which
appears are three buttons towards the top right of the window. The top
one has an arrows, underneath is an arrows and third is a button
resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. It is not
obvious but this action places a copy of the button in your Clipboard.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.
