Windows XP Professional Software and Update problems

Hello.

I recently upgraded my Windows XP Home to XP Professional and it
wouldn't get updates from Microsoft. First, when I tried automatic
updates, it said "The following updates were not installed: Windows
Installer 3.1" If I try the manual .exe it would say "Access
Denied" (I already tried safe mode on admin and my own account, and my
Windows is genuine) I stopped taking help from other forums because
their solutions caused me to reformat. And that was when MORE problems
approached.

I am using AIM 5.9.6089 and IM windows would usually flash
automatically when someone IMs me while my windows are minimized but
it hasn't flashed at all since I reformated my XP Pro. (I have already
tried uninstalling and reinstalling AIM 5.9.6089) I also tried other
IM clients such as Trillian and Pidgin, and their IM windows flashed.

Also, when I installed AIM 6.1 to try see if the IM windows flash, the
AIM's interface was messy. It was not sleek and shiny as shown on the
website and screenshots I've checked. I've asked other people and
everyone elses' AIM 6.1 are fine. Mine looked plain white, and when I
try to sign on, it doesn't connect. The same thing happened with AIM
6.2 Beta.

I couldn't find solutions for my AIM problems anywhere because the
issue seems so uncommon. AIM.com support is terrible.. I can't send in
my problem descriptions. I've also seen no solution that helps my
Windows Installer 3.1 issue. I've tried one that required
deleting .dll's and it caused my computer to fail horrifically (Add/
Remove Programs disappeared from Control Panel, Windows Security
Center was missing the midsection and was blank, slow performance.) I
also scanned for viruses and spyware (Kaspersky Internet Suite 7.0)
and it found two viruses which I then deleted. Still there was no
improvement.

Does anyone else have a solution? Thank you!

Oh yeah and one more problem... lol. My gmail notifier stopped working
and it says "Cannot log in to mailbox (12045) The server's certificate
is invalid" (my system's time and date property is correct for my
area) and my Internet Explorer 7 has been blocking sites recommending
me not to go on them because of Certificate errors.. I've read that
the easiest way to avoid this problem was to install the certificate.
I tried that and it didn't change a thing. Does anyone know a solution
for this also? Thank you.
