Hi,

I am trying to reinstall windows xp since one of the updates i installed
crashed it. When i boot into the setup cd and press f8 for the eula, it
tries to detect windows xp and it doesnt, just goes to getting ready to
install a fresh copy. Is there any way i can get it to detect xp and repair
it so i dont have to do a complete clean install?

This really calls for a "repair" job instead of re-installation.
When prompted after the Windows XP cdrom starts, enter R and go
to Repair.

All R does is gets me into the recovery console. I tried uninstalling a few
updates but i still cant get into windows. I need to reinstall to save me
some headaches. Can i do something other the fixboot and fixmbr in recovery
console to help my situation? My main concern is why windows cannot detect
my previous version of windows, what does the setup check for to see if
previous version of windows is installed or not? It should detect it since i
can get into recovery console and log into with by giving the administrator
password..

I know that the next screen is for repair, that is my problem, it cannot
detect my previous version of windows so i cannot repair it. Here are my
question again.

1. I cannot get my windows setup to detect my prev version of windows xp
sp2 in teh setup after teh eula.

2. What does windows xp setup check for when it checks if you have a
previous version of windows, maybe that is messed up so that why it cannot
detect my version of windows.

3. Is there anyway i can fix this from windows recovery console, i already
tried fixboot and fixmbr, also uninstalled a few updates which didnt help.
