In your Subject line you say "CD is no longer valid" but in the
text you write that Setup cannot find a previous version of
Windows. It is a little unclear which one is your problem. If
it is the latter then your currently installed version is probably
not a full retail version, hence the installation process cannot
locate it. You need to perform a full installation.

Suggestions?

What is the make and model of the laptop? What OS was originally
installed on it? What was the method provided to return your PC to its
original condition: installation disk, recovery/restore disk, or hidden
recovery partition on the hard drive?

What specific problems were you experiencing in the first place that
prompted your repair install attempt? Is your laptop currently bootable?

When performing a clean install using an Upgrade CD, you have to insert
the CD of the older, qualifying OS to prove that you're entitled to use
an Upgrade license. Simply insert that CD when prompted, and carry on.

That's assuming that the OP *has* such a disk...

Of course. He'll find one. But I predict that that won't be the end of his
problems.

Well, that is what he says he has. I can only assume that he can
accurately read the labeling of the CD he's holding in his hand.

If it isn't... then why is it looking for a previous edition? Isn't
that only done with an upgrade version?

I'm trying to get him to look at what he using so we can all be on the same
page.

Well, that is what he says he has. I can only assume that he can

I was under the impression that the disk he is holding in his hand is
the Upgrade disk. Unless I missed it, OP never did say if he had the
original media or not.

His post is a bit unclear. First he stated he had an "original XP Pro
CD, Retail, not OEM." He didn't specify if it was Full or Upgrade. And
I'm not sure what he meant by "original" either. Then he described what
happened when he booted from it. It appeared like he was trying to
perform a repair install. He later stated that:
Setup cannit find previous version of WIndows Installed. To

Yep, My previous attempt at a Repair failed, which forced me to

I assume the last sentence was qualifying his first one (i.e., his disk
is a Retail Upgrade of XP Pro). As you stated, OP simply needs to insert
the CD of the older, qualifying OS. But I don't see where he stated that
he has one (unless there's another post I'm not seeing).

It was there, if obscured. Look at the last paragraph of his original
post, quoted above.

I do agree, however, that his post, as a whole, is more than a little
unclear. Especially irksome is the fact that the subject line bears
absolutely no relationship to the contents of the post.

My reading is that OP tried to perform a repair install with his XP Pro
retail upgrade disk. He was unsuccessful. Then he tried a clean install
using the same disk (which of course won't work without the qualifying
OS media).

Of course we'll never know for sure what Mr. Mike is talking about if he
doesn't bother to make a second post...

Daave

Yes, Frank. We know he has an upgrade disk. That's not what Bruce was
talking about; he was referring to the *older* CD (which may not even be
in the possession of OP for all we know).
