Help with Windows XP Repair

Ok, my Windows XP will boot to the splash screen and then a little after that
the pc reboots.

I've booted from my Windows XP Pro cd and tried to get to the second 'R"
Repair, but I never see it. All I see is the first one...the Repair Console.
Why can I not see the second one?

I'm talking about the one listed below...copied from MS's help documents...

You receive the following message on the Welcome to Setup screen that appears:
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on
your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press ENTER to set up Windows XP.
4. On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement.
5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the
box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall Windows
XP. After you repair Windows XP, you may have to reactivate your copy of
Windows XP.

Hi,

I've booted from my Windows XP Pro cd and tried to get to the second 'R"
Repair, but I never see it. All I see is the first one...the Repair
Console.
Why can I not see the second one?

When you first boot, you don't want the repair option (hitting 'r'). You
want to begin the installation (setup) routine.
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

At this point you are choosing said:
4. On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement.
5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in
the
box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

Ok, here is where setup should detect the existing installation and list it
with an offer to repair it. Is this not what you are seeing? If not, what
are you seeing?

I am getting to the setup screen where I choose the hard drive and partition.
The options there are:

ENTER=Install D=Delete Partition F3=Quit

There is no "R" for repair like there is suppose to be. That's the problem.

I am pressing ENTER where I see the recovery console. I then press F8 to
accept the agreement. After this point there is no "R" for repair.

Hi Mike

I'm having a problem not getting the Acitive X to install. Also, I'm not
sure if I'm getting all of the security "Patches," etc. Anyway to check or
other ideas?

Thanks in advance

Brian

Hi,

If no installations are listed at this point, then setup has either
determined that the installation cannot be repaired or cannot locate it due
to a corruption at some point.

Have you tried running a chkdsk /r yet?

I'm going to pick up where original poster left off.

I am having the same problems, the second R is not listed. i ran a
chkdsk /r, and it said it found one or more unrecoverable errors. What
do i do next?

I ran chkdsk /p, this seemed to fix the error, though it didn't give
any details. i am able to boot up now.

It never does give you much if any info on what it does. Check in event
viewer for what it does display.

When you boot to the Windows XP CD, you will have options to install windows
PRESS ENTER or PRESS R for Recovery Console. You want to press enter. You
will then have a list of your partitions. If you see your windows partition
but do not have a Press R for repair, then a file like your boot.ini is
corrupt. There is a possible fix for this. Sometimes this works and sometimes
it does not. Link below.
