While doing Installation Repair can't proceed w/out CD Key, options?

A friend of mine called me. He bought a used Dell laptop 3 yrs ago,
didn't record the CD Key, lost a file due to a flaky AC powerstrip when
battery was dead, was prompted to do a Repair by Windows, did the repair
(as shown on this site):

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your
screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then
press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.
3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.
4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement.
5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in
the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

and now he's stuck at the screen where he has to enter his CD Key which
was used to activate his Windows... but he can't find it anywhere, and
the guy who sold him the computer who originally installed XP on it
can't find it either.

is there a way to back out of the current situation and do an XP Upgrade
as shown on this site:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/xp_in_place_upgrade.htm
1. From Windows insert the XP CD into the CD player.
2. Choose install
3. Select upgrade
4. Follow prompts, supply a valid Product Key when asked.
5. Continue setup, activate XP over the Internet if necessary.
6. All updates and hot fixes will need to be reapplied.

OR is there a way for us to run a program to detect his CD KEY (like
this program)
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Miscellaneous/ArezView.shtml

The trouble is when we boot from the CD windows keeps prompting us for
the CD KEY, I am wondering if there is a way to detect the key that was
previously used to activate the original version of windows on his
machine. So far the machine seems to be stuck at the step for entering
the KEY, but if we could boot from a floppy and modify or delete some
files so we could boot and run the CD KEY detector that would be great.
Is that possible?

Thanks,
Mike
