You need to do a repair installation. Repair the Windows XP Installation

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.

Remove any floppy disks and ZIP disks from their respective drives. Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Hi, there, I fried my motherboard. I think (but do not know for
certain) that my hard drives are ok.

My thought is that I would just need to transfer the hard drives to a
new system. But how would I use the install CD to reinstall without
overwriting the data on my hard drive?

I have three drives and three partitions. The system partition also
includes lots of user data.

Another thing. I haven't decided whether to do this recovery job
myself. I have lots of personal private data on my hard drive which I
probably wouldn't want a PC technician to see. In my current
configuration, they'd need an admin password, but if I'm hiring
somebody to transfer the hard drives to another motherboard, doesn't
that mean they would be able to have access to these files as well?

I'm resigned to the fact that I may have no choice, but are there
solutions to protect private data within XP for precisely this kind of
scenario?

Repair install.

thanks for the quick replies.

Well, I'm not 100% certain it is fried. But a faulty power supply
caused it, and I can't get it to post even with a new power supply. So
that's why I'm buying a new one.

Lemme guess. This is a Black and Silver emachine?
