How do you perform a reinstallation of Windows XP, sometimes called a repair
installation?
Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information
about how to do this, refer to your computer's documentation or contact your
computer manufacturer. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart
your computer.
When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen,
press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press
ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.
Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.
In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license
agreement.
Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the
box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.
See these Knowledge Base articles for more information on reinstalling
Windows XP: How To: Troubleshoot Windows XP Setup Problems When You Upgrade
from Windows 98 or Windows Me.
Back to the User Tips home page"

After pressing F8 I get just two items in the box, top is "Unpartitioned
space 2008mb"
and "Partition 1 (HDD) [NTFS] 37072mb ( 23992 MB free )

and there's no "R" to press ?

any ideas ?

Hi,

Does it see the existing installation? If so, it should be listed. The "r"
option will only be there when an existing installation is selected for
repair.

hello, the only r that was ever available was to go to the recovery console.
And seeing as there wasn't even an edit.exe/com available, and even
attrib.exe wouldn't work properly, (why on earth MS had to change the syntax
for old dos externals' god only knows - try doing an attrib -r -h -s
boot.ini and even that falls flat on its' face, you have to change one flag
at a time!), I gave up, and proceeded to install into C:\ where it already
was, and where xp home kindly advised me that the existing windows
installation would be destroyed. As for that recovery console, words escape
me to be able to express my hatred at MS for not even making an ascii editor
available ! I'm surprised they didn't put edlin back in
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Michael,

I've bookmarked your site for future reference. This particular PC finally
revealed what had caused the original constant rebooting. i.e. after
running flawlessly for about three hours, the hd started making a
"clunk,,,,,cullllunk" noise, every two seconds approx. !

Twas a Packard Bell XP1600 1.4ghz 256mb 40gb hd. It started up a second
time after being switched off in disgust the night before, and behaved
itself long enough for me to zip up and backout to three floppies, 3.4mb's
worth of AMR modem drivers, that was of most concern to me, seeing as xp
home didn't want anything to do with that modem. That was the only bit of
hardware showing in DM as having no drivers installed for it, after
installing xp home.

Fortunately this was a "family pc" with little or no important data files in
it. New hd going in later.

Again, thanks.
