My xp pc was running slowly. It worked, incl wireless but slowly so I tried a fresh installation and formatted the whole drive

The installation worked bur now my pc doesnt seem to recognise it has a wireless card

You don't tell us enough to say for sure, but I will guess that the
wireless "card" is integrated into the motherboard, and that you will
need the chipset driver from the motherboard manufacturer to allow
Windows access to those chipset features.

What brand and model motherboard or computer is it?

Nevertheless, Compaq is a respectable company. Have you looked on their
website for files for your particular computer? I only know Dell, but
they have a set of downloadable files for every model I've dealt with.

Dell lists by model, not by motherboard ID

C,

Compaq was acquired by HP.

Assuming XP Pro:

Go to Driver-Network section and download the appropriate wireless driver.

It is either the Intel Pro Wireless adapter or Broadcom Wireless adapter.

These drivers will work with both XP home and XP Pro

Hope this helps.
