Bill

I was told not to defrag my hard drive as it can and will
cause problems with NTFS files. Is this true or not?
Thanks...

When referring to XP's own defragmenter, that statement is not only untrue,
it's rediculous.

I've heard that using tyres on a ford car may hurt the suspension.

My only suggestion is to stick with the defrag that comes
with windows. Ive used diskeeper and perfect disk and
they have caused me problems.

Im not sure why diskeeper pro would cause problems since I
believe the windows defrag is a lite version of the same
thing.

George,

All defragmenters (including the built-in defragmenter) use the same
Microsoft defrag APIs. I'm curious as to what problems both Diskeeper and
PerfectDisk "caused".

The built-in defragmenter is NOT a "lite" version of Diskeeper.

David,

Under Windows XP - yes. SpeedDisk now uses Microsoft's defrag APIs.

All use defrag API's, has Norton changed?
