Problems with Defragmentor

Guest

After running the disk defragmentor in Windows XP SP2, the report stated that
some files couldn't be defragmented. However, it didn't list any files. In
addition, the before and after charts of fragmentation on the hard drive
looked identical, which means nothing was defragmented. Any ideas on what
the issue is?

Thanks.

Probably just as it sounds--things were not fragmented enough to really show
up on the bar graph. There are usually a few files that don't get
defragged.

I find that my XP machine doesn't get fragmented nearly as much or easily as
the W 9x. systems do/did. I seldom find *any* appreciable advantage after
running a defrag., even when it's only once a month.

I only bother to defrag after major installations or uninstalls. Maybe a few
other times per year when I think about it. What I often forget to do is to
empty TEMP. WinXP needs so little maintenance in general that it's hard to
get serious about doing it frequently.

Might try a 3rd party defrag program. I fine that Auslogics Disk Defrag
(Free version) from http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag does a better job
than WIN XP SP2 built in defrag. However you will still have a few files
that will not be defragged. I believe this is due to them being in use at
the time of defragging. After running Auslogics Disk Defrag, click Display
Report button to see a report on the defragging process.

The issue is that you are needlessly worrying about defragmention.

No file which is open can be defragmented. This includes the pagefile,
hyberfile, and the mft for starters.

The display that dfrag shows is so coarse that almost nothing can be gained
by looking at it.

Quite normal.

I wish I was, but the defragmentor analyzer states that my hard drive should
be defragmented
