Problems with disk defrag and checkdisk

Hi
Im having problems with my windows xp home disk defrag, It loads up fine but
when I select defrag it says disk defragmentor cannot start, I also cannot do
a disk check it says windows unable to complete disk check.

I have tried many ways suggested on other boards and am hoping some one here
can help as this is driving me nuts.
The only program I installed was nero9 but am not sure if that would cause
problems.
I have removed nero9 and the above problems continue.

Thanks folks..

firstly, defrag requires
a minimal amount of
free disk space to function.

I believe it is 15%.

secondly, defrag requires
sufficient amount of virtual
memory.

so if the vm is set to auto
it may not be increasing
as it should to provide
defrag with the amount
of memory it needs to
run.

however, none of the above
matters if the file system
is dirty or corrupted.

what you can do is to
boot with any xp cd.

select "repair" then you
can log into disk system
via the recovery console.

at the disk prompt run
the following command>:

chkdsk /p

then "exit" and then look
into defrag.
