WinXP Defrag.

Q

Queenhunter

Hello. My disk is very fragmented.

I have removed all unused programs, Disk cleanup, I have 24% free disk space.

Dell Dimension 3000-Win XP-

Problem- Disk Defragment will only defrag 5-12% and then conks out.

I keep repeating hoping it will have a accumulative affect. but it does not.

I have never incurred this before. It will not complete the defrag process.

Always states defrag is done . but it is not.

Any help, suggestions, fixes would be greatly appreciated

Try doing it in Safe Mode under the Administrator's account. Are you
doing a clean up before defragging? Are you disabling your anti virus
resident scan before defragging? For a really good clean up program,
check out http://www.ccleaner.com/. It's free.

What does conks out mean?

How do you know it is not complete when it is done?

Could it really be done, but you don't think is is done? (What is
your definition of done)

When it finishes do remaining red areas in your graphical report mean
it is not done/incomplete to you?

Does it say it is complete?

What do you think should be happening?

When it finishes, you can view/save a report. Post the report here
and we can look at it with you.

db

you may have to run
a chkdsk /r first,

then a defrag.

---------------

you see, by removing
a bunch of programs,

the master file table
probably needed a
tune up afterwards
and before running
a defrag.

24% is a bit low but above the threshold which would cause defrag to
have issues. Go grab JKDefrag (free) and try that instead. Much more
optimized than built in defrag.

Do you have more than 15% free disk space?

Select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Defragmenter

Chkdsk suggested by another is unlikely to provide a solution.

If you still can't get Disk Defragmenter to complete. Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on
Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and
post a copy.

Hope this helps.

I thought you'd like to know:

Jeroen Kessels /stopped/ updating JKDefrag at version 3.36 and will
not be going any further with that project name.

However, his defrag project has caused him to rename JKDefrag to
MyDefrag and the current version picks up the version numbering where
JKDefrag left off. The current stable one is at v4.12

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mydefrag>

<http://www.mydefrag.com/>

Mysteriously, Jeroen still makes JKDefrag available though:

<http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/index.html>

IMHO, MyDefrag/JKDefrag is excellent when preceded with a general
cleanup and then CCleaner.

Yep, already knew this. JKDefrag is portable, MyDefrag isn't which is
why I recommended it. If the OP wanted the installable version, then
I'm sure they go with 4.x. Cheers.
