windows XP installation problems..

John Katsaridas

I run into problems when I install windows XP
on my machine. I boot from the windows XP CD
and after the installation copies all the files
onto my hard disk my computer reboots.
And then once it tries to load from the hard disk
my PC stalls with a black screen.
I have a Pentium2 266Mhz, with 64Mb Ram and a
6GB hard disk with a Matrox millenium video card.
Any ideas? Thanks.

That computer is below the recommended system requirements for Windows XP.
Have you run the Upgrade Advisor and checked for compatibility of the
hardware?

I have checked up on the Internet. There is a website
called Focus on Windows. The official minimum
requirements for Windows XP Home edition are
CPU -- 300 MHz
RAM -- 128 MB
Disk spce -- 1.5 GB free
Video card -- Super VGA (800 X 600)
Media -- CD ROM or DVD

Unfortunately, there is a program called Ludens Reality
Adjustment which says the true minima are
CPU -- 600 MHz
RAM -- 256 MB
Disk space -- 15 GB free
Video card -- 1024 X 768

You should also check that all of your hardware works
with Windows XP.

It looks like you need a more powerful computer.

Microsoft have a free download called Upgrade Advisor
which can tell you if your computer is compatible with
the operating system.

Your mainboard may not be compatible with Windows XP.
Check with your mainboard manufacturer to determine if it
is "Windows 2000" complaint or can be flashed to make it
complaint.
Your computer does not reach the minimum requirements but
may still operate, provided your hardware is compatible.

Resolving your problem:
Remove any non essential harware or expansion card from
the computer.
Restart. If the problem persists, boot directly from the
Windows XP setup disc and use the Recovery Console:
type:
FIXMBR [ENTER Key]
FIXBOOT [ENTER Key]
exit [ENTER Key}
