Windows Installer problem

DavidA

I am using XP Pro SP3, plenty of RAM and hard disk space. I am trying
to install Adobe Photoshop CS5. The installation starts out normally,
but when it gets to 18% the screen goes black and the machine re-
boots. I've spent 5 days on the phone with Adobe to no avail. Today
they told me that the installation log shows that the problem lies
with Microsoft Installer. (I have the log file, but it doesn't mean
much to me.) HOw do I repair/update this service?

Any light in the darkness would be greatly appreciated.

Is Automatic Updates working properly & is the computer currently
fully-patched at Windows Update?

.

Thanks for both responses. Yes, Windows Update is on auto, and it is being
updated. Will try the link to update the installer.

Huh? You're getting it updated ("it is being updated") or it is updated?
What link?

How do I reset Windows Update components?
=> Access KB971058 via Internet Explorer (32-bit) only; Run the Fix It in
DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes; reboot [1]

[1] Full Disclosure: Running the Fix It in AGGRESSIVE mode will delete your
Update History but not the list of installed updates in Add/Remove Programs
