Strange Shutdown and Persistent Install Requests

Strange Shutdown
I set my Win XP Pro laptop to hibernate on closing the lid.
It has been like that for years and I use every day.
This last time it did not go to hibernate but kept on running until it
killed the battery.

What can cause this and what to look out for?

Persistent Install Request.
Every time I boot I get an update request for Adobe Flash.
Sometimes I do the install and sometimes I check the box to NOT remind
me but it always requests an install. I cannot believe that Adobe has
written such a crappy installer or that Adobe has that many updates.

Any suggestions other than removing Adobe Flash forever?

I also get a persistent request from Nero to install the other programs
that I have a license for. But I do not what those other programs
installed.

How can I kill that message?

What happens when you just try to shutdown Windows?

Something new you installed is preventing shutdown. I've had this with
various programs the last one of which was MagicJack. After a couple
years, they finally came out with a version (they do forced installs
instead of asking users for permission) that honors the shutdown request
to get their app to close.

See what happens if you disable all startup items (use msconfig.exe to
start with, SysInternals' AutoRuns later if msconfig misses some startup
entries), reboot into Windows normal mode (but now without all the
startup items), and close the lid. Does it hibernate now?

If it was the new software runs as a service, you have to start
disabling non-critical services to see which one prevents shutdown.

You might find something in Event Viewer showing a program is not
responsive (to the shutdown request for an app to close). Clear all the
event logs and try to shutdown to see if something shows up there.
Persistent Install Request.
Every time I boot I get an update request for Adobe Flash.

That is a separate issue and should be addressed in a separate thread.
Start a new thread. Until then use SysInternals' AutoRuns to see what
startup items you have. Presumably you are NOT loading your web browser
when you "boot".
