There are several versions of XP, none of them come with MS Office. Any MS
Office software must be purchased seperately.

I think that you are confusing the MS Office Professional version with
Windows XP Professional, they are not the same thing.

Works saves spreadsheets as *. xlr files and Excel saves then as *.xls
files.

You can open Excel spreadsheets with Microsoft Works.

Right click an *.xls file
Click Open With
Select Microsoft Works Spreadsheet
Click OK

You can then do a Save As and save the file as .xls or .xlr

You can also open Works Spreadsheet in Excel, here's how.

Open Microsoft Works files in Excel

Sorry, but you're all mixed up here. Note several points:

1. Windows XP, whether Home or Professional, *does* support Excel (but does
not come with it)..

2. Windows XP, whether Home or Professional, does *not* include Microsoft
Works.

You're mixing up the operating system and applications. Windows XP, like all
versions of Windows before it, comes with essentially no applications,
neither Excel, Works, nor anything else. That's true of XP Home *and* of XP
Professional. Installing XP Professional won't help you at all.

If your computer came with Microsoft Works, it is because the vendor you
bought it from chose to bundle Works as part of the package he sold you, not
because Works came with the operating system.

If you need a copy of Microsoft Excel, you need to buy it. It can be bought
either alone or as part of the Microsoft Office suite.
