windows xp home edition cannot run on normal mode.

my comp crashed a few weeks ago. when restarted, it only has a black screen.
everything seems to be running in the background. only works on safemode now.
i've tried everything. also ran a virus check but nothing came up. windows
was preinstalled so, i don't have a copy.

any help is appreciated.

W/O a xp cd it limits the fixes available,however,open in safe mode with
a cmd prompt,type:CHKDSK C: /R Agree to restart,type:EXIT Restart computer.

It continues to be a black screen. Thanks for responding though.
