Windows Xp Home Doesn't shutdown correctly

Hi,

I am trying to fix a problem with a friends PC,(why does every one assume
you know everything about windows when you work in IT)

When you do a shutdown it gets to the "Windows Xp Shutting down"and jst
hangs for ever.

Apparently there is a white paper or other document that explains the
possible problems on www.microsoft.com but I can't find it.

Any ideas for a good source for info on this

Thanks

I've looked at all these suggestions but none seem to fit. XP Home, Svc Pk 2,
all current upgrades. Shutdown intermittantly hangs on "Windows shutting
down" screen for manual shut down, restart from upgrade and manual restart.
Auto restart not set. Problem seems to have started with MS upgrades on July
11.

I had the same problem and it seems to be solved. Working with symptoms not
causes -- don't know why it works. Go thru shutdown procedure until you get
to the "turn off computer" box and stop. Let the desktop completely change
to black and white (lose all color) then hold the left click down on "turn
off" for 2-3 secs before releasing. If I'm not patient and rush it it won't
work, but it's worth playing with to get the timing right. Problem seems to
have started after the July updates for XP.
